I recently gave a friend a salt cellar as a thank-you gift. To be specific, the Il Buco salt cellar, which I knew he would never buy for himself. Not because he wouldn’t like it. I knew exactly what would happen if he saw it in real life: he would admire it, pick it up, consider the price, and begin assembling a perfectly reasonable case for why he did not need to spend $95 housing his salt. He already had somewhere to put the salt. The salt, frankly, had not been asking for more.
Then I gave it to him, and he put it on the counter with the pride of someone who had just completed a small kitchen renovation. Suddenly the seasoning area had been upgraded. He was thrilled.
