In 1938, Hitler annexed the Sudetenland, part of Czechoslovakia—like Putin has done in Ukraine—and rolled into the rest of the country in 1939. So a middle-aged citizen in a nice big coat in the winter of 1938 could well imagine that trouble was on the way.
