Last month, I was attempting to board a violently bobbing Zodiac pneumatic tender in the harbor of Stone Town, in Zanzibar, in a driving rainstorm—bound for Aqua Lares, the new super-yacht from Aqua Expeditions founder Francesco Galli Zugaro.
“Jump!” The barked command from a deckhand below made me freeze, but finally I lunged and landed on the deck. During the 10 minutes that followed, I was soaked to the bone by the waves breaking against the bow. When we reached the ship, it was almost as arduous to leave the tender as it had been to board it. What on earth had I gotten myself into?
