On Christmas Eve 2018, the public toilets at London Victoria Station—the city’s busiest—closed for a $5.5 million renovation. When they reopened the following April, the 40-cent entrance fee was gone. In its place: free access for the roughly 80 million travelers who pass through the station each year, plus a distinctly grander experience.

Designed by architectural firm Landolt + Brown—which took inspiration from the bathrooms at Claridge’s and the Savoy—the washrooms now feature bespoke, precast terrazzo wash troughs; an interior greenhouse; and a plaque proclaiming, Loo of the Year Awards 2020, Overall Grade Awarded: Diamond.
