“Every person that worked on this movie was going through a similar feeling of cognitive dissonance,” Lance Oppenheim, the documentary director, said recently of You Can See Everything, the film he made with Nathan Fielder about the Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. “We would unpack the day’s events, and no one could agree on the seemingly mundane moments that would transpire.”
When I read that, I felt a wave of relief. Even gratitude. Because in 2016, shortly after leaving The New York Times and joining Vice and HBO, I spent two days inside Theranos with Holmes as her company collapsed and she moved towards the federal fraud conviction that forms the backdrop of the new film. I still do not understand what happened in that building.
