After working in fashion design under Ashley Williams, Claire Barrow, and Jeremy Scott, and as a stylist for Vivienne Westwood, Amelia Rose took on a job at a morgue. The Londoner had experienced a period of grief, which made her think she wanted to get into the funereal business. “The smell was so intense and repulsive I couldn’t handle it,” says Rose of the morgue. “I became obsessed with scent through this and the visceral reactions it can give people.” That obsession yielded her new perfume brand, Faux Rose. Inspired by the 50s and 60s vintage glamour magazines—stocked at Islington’s de facto museum of erotica, Ram Books, where she works part-time—her nostalgic scents produced entirely by hand act as the loveliest of olfactory tonics. Viva Maria, for example, evokes “lovers’ road trips from Rome to Italy’s Calabrian Coast” with notes of jasmine and crushed seashells. ($121, fauxrose.com) —Spike Carter

Muzen
It was a sad day when the faint glow of the transistor radio finally burned out. We sacrificed it for the cracked-out glare of phones paired with Bluetooth speakers that sound good but aren’t much to look at. Technological advancement is fine, but why does everything have to look like hell? Thanks to the Muzen OTR Bluetooth speaker, music can once again be an aesthetic experience. Styled to resemble the transistors of the past, it couples an FM radio tuner with Bluetooth capabilities, so you have the choice of being the master of your own musical fate or handing over the reins to the last of the radio D.J.’s. The Muzen OTR’s battery life is robust, and in addition to being available in a range of candy-coated colors, it comes in a handsome wood-grain finish. So you can feel good about leaving it out in your bathroom for shower-time listening or bringing it to the beach, where you’ll be a cut above the hordes and their matte rubberized speakers, which may play louder but don’t say much at all. Downton Abbey x Bonhams
Can you call yourself a Downton Abbey fan if your living room’s display cases aren’t crawling with authentic memorabilia? Through September 16, the London auction house Bonhams will host an online sale of costumes, set pieces, and props from the series. Lady Mary Crawley’s wedding dress and bouquet, several of Mrs. Patmore’s cooks’ uniforms and pinafores, and a pair of white gloves worn by Thomas Barrow are among the highlights. But the top lot might be the notorious bell wall, which clattered incessantly to alert the servants to the desires and whims of their employers. (It’s estimated to go for between $6,500 and $10,000.) Those who visit London can stop into the New Bond Street showroom to see some of these items—or shall we refer to them as “historical artifacts”?—on display. (bonhams.com) —Ashley Baker

La Mercerie
There are good chocolate cakes, there are great chocolate cakes, and then there’s the Gâteau Forêt-Noire at La Mercerie—a dessert so decadent, so unreasonably elegant, it should come with a warning and a sabbatical. The new Cake du Jour program at the Roman and Williams–designed restaurant features an exquisitely constructed cake presented each evening at dinner, conceived by executive chef Heloise Fischbach. Rotating concoctions include a strawberry charlotte, an apricot chamomile tart, and a layered chocolate entremet involving peanut praline and a fudge glaze. But the Forêt-Noire is Fischbach’s magnum opus, with kirsch-soaked cherries, vanilla chantilly, dark chocolate, and just enough restraint to keep it from tipping into birthday territory. One slice in, I found myself casually asking if they sell full-size cakes. They do. With 48 hours’ notice. (lamercerieny.com) —Jen Noyes
