Does anyone else travel around Italy with the frequency of Marie-Louise Sciò? Although the sunny, stylish taste-maker lives in Rome, she is frequently shuttling between her three hotels—La Posta Vecchia, in Palo Laziale, the Mezzatore Hotel & Thermal Spa, on Ischia, and Il Pellicano, on the Tuscan coast. “The Pelli,” as it’s known, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, so for the moment Sciò is staying close to home to mastermind the many festivities. But before long, this peripatetic entrepreneur will be back at cruising altitude. Here’s how she does it.
What do you wear to the airport?
Bally loafers, High Sport pants, a Row sweater, and my trusty Sab jacket.
How long before your flight boards do you get to the airport?
Two hours ahead—gives me just the right buffer.
Check bags, or carry-on only?
Both. I like options.
What do you bring in your carry-on?
A scarf, the Bomba meditation shawl, Apple earphones, my sketchbook, pencil case, and a book.
T.S.A. PreCheck or regular?
Regular.
What do you buy in the airport terminal?
Books and magazines—something to read or flip through on the flight.
What do you do while waiting to board?
I read or listen to podcasts while doing laps around the terminal.
Item you can’t fly without?
A scarf, always.
First class or coach?
Depends on the trip, but I usually aim for the first row—I’m not the biggest fan of flying.
Window, middle, or aisle seat?
Aisle.
How do you pass the time in the plane?
Watching movies, working, reading—it depends on the mood and the flight length.
Do you buy Wi-Fi?
Nope. I actually enjoy the forced digital detox.
Favorite airplane meal?
Cathay Pacific served the best I’ve had.
Best drink to get on a flight?
To sleep? A glass of red wine and gallons of water.
Do you talk to the people sitting next to you?
I try not to—nothing personal.
Keep shoes on or off on the plane?
Off—with big, cozy cashmere socks on.
What do you do when turbulence hits?
I panic, honestly.
Worst part of the flight?
Long hauls when I can’t sleep. Torture.
First thing you do when the plane lands?
Call my son.
Advice for travelers?
Don’t forget to take a scarf.
