WEAR

American Optical

We’ve all seen the photos of John F. Kennedy sailing his Wianno Senior, wearing a grey crewneck sweater or a leather G-1 with the presidential seal, looking more American than a hot dog on the Fourth of July. But more than the clothes or the boat, what stands out is those sunglasses. They’re somewhere between Wayfarers and those military standard-issue celluloid frames from the 50s, not tragically hip but not comically square. Those frames, it turns out, were made by the Illinois-based eyewear manufacturer American Optical, which still sells the J.F.K. model as the “Saratoga.” You can buy them in the tortoise, which is what the commander in chief himself wore, or a range of nine other colors, with polarized lenses or without. And if you’re looking for something wire-rimmed, try out the Original Pilot frames, which aren’t aviators and therefore won’t make you look like a politician or smarmy pundit. From the looks of it, Bob Dylan wore them when Obama presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom—and that man knows his shades. ($210, aoeyewear.com) —Nathan King

READ

The End of August

Paint your July with a multi-generational, multi-voiced novel by Yū Miri, a Korean writer who grew up in Japan. Her words are weaved together beautifully, breaking from paced prose into poetry that feels like running. The story is set in Japanese-occupied Korea, beginning in the early 1930s. The sheer detail is absolutely mesmerizing and horrifying at times (see: war). I feel that sometimes the best way to understand underscored parts of history is through novels, such as 2666, by Roberto Bolaño. This slowly warming summer beckons an epic. The End of August is 700 pages, and I could barely tear myself away. ($35, amazon.com) —Andie Blaine

CARRY

Bottega Veneta

Fifty years ago, Bottega Veneta introduced a technique of weaving leather strips, fettuce, and it became the house’s signature. Today, the Intrecciato collection introduces a perfectly summery tote in the same style. (Which, frankly, we wish our mothers had bought 50 years ago.) Supremely useful, it’s lightweight enough for everyday use and equally well suited to travel, fitting a monstrous amount of snacks, beach reads, and sunscreen. It comes in four colors, but we’re partial to the white, especially for this particular time of year. ($3,500; bottegaveneta.com) —Ashley Baker

WATCH

La Belle Noiseuse

Jacques Rivette’s La Belle Noiseuse (The Beautiful Troublemaker), winner of the Grand Prix at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival, is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel. The 237-minute masterpiece, loosely inspired by an Honoré de Balzac story, follows the painter Edouard Frenhofer (Michel Piccoli), who lives with his wife, Liz (Jane Birkin), in a Provençal château. He is inspired to come out of retirement to paint the gorgeous model and girlfriend of a young visiting artist, Marianne (Emmanuelle Béart). The movie’s main themes? Art, sweltering summer, aging, and bodies—notably that of Béart, who is fully naked throughout much of the nearly four-hour film. Named by Akira Kurosawa as one of his favorite films of all time, La Belle Noiseuse—every single frame of which is arrestingly beautiful—is a deeply resonant gem of hypnotic, sensual moviemaking. With an S.P.F. of 30, it’s the rare tinted sunscreen that dermatologists, makeup artists, and your most pore-paranoid friend can all agree on. Which is saying something.
