Sitting in the window of my local coffee shop—the Coppola Cafe, on West Fourth Street in New York City’s West Village—I saw one of those classic red, torch-topped fire-alarm call boxes. It looked like a miniature cast-iron lighthouse, and I said, “I’m going to draw you.” Thanks, fire-alarm box, for posing for me.
