Eve Arnold’s newly discovered pictures of Marilyn Monroe capture the enduring friendship between Magnum’s first female photographer and an actress fighting for success in a male-dominated world

It has often been said that Marilyn Monroe made love to the camera, but what is most evident about this series of photographs is the confidence and relaxation she exudes in her collaboration with the photographer.

It is not surprising that Marilyn, with her extraordinary gift for conveying emotional colors, would seek the mirror that Eve Arnold’s camera provided.

Here are gentle portraits of a ravishing child-woman—feline, innocent, anxious, trusting, sad, sweet, passionate, and funny, at one with the glittering, molten Monroe—forever beautiful in the reflection of her unique beholder. Eve Arnold has allowed us to share this transcendent communication.
