Drew Friedman’s Sketchbook Willie Tyler, depicted here in the early 70s with his dummy, Lester, was the most acclaimed Black ventriloquist ever, performing on tour with Motown acts of the 60s as well as in nightclubs and on television. Tyler, who celebrated his 82nd birthday last month, is the subject of an upcoming documentary about his life and career called Hello Dummy! (which was Lester’s regular greeting to Willie).
