Sixty years ago this month, Dr. No, the first James Bond movie, began shooting on location in Jamaica. Overtures had been made to both Cary Grant and James Mason to play the lead, but neither would commit to multiple films; author Ian Fleming favored Richard Todd. Despite the producers’ initial reservations about Sean Connery, the mere act of his crossing a London street clinched it: he walked “like a panther,” said the first wife of producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli. And so, the erstwhile milkman, coffin polisher, and male model assumed the role—and became a superstar.
