The Summer Bag
Petit Kouraj
Although the canvas-tote-bag trend shows no sign of slowing, allow us to suggest a much more stylish wear-everywhere summer bag. Petit Kouraj is the brainchild of fashion stylist Nasrin Jean-Baptiste, who was inspired to start her collection after a 2018 trip to her native Haiti. All of her macramé styles, made of organic cotton, leather, and rayon fringe, are created by hand, in partnership with D.O.T. Haiti, a female-founded organization that focuses on the preservation of the country’s culture. The large fringe tote is just the thing to stash the essentials, a bit of summer reading, and even a farmers’-market find. ($445, petitkouraj.com)
The Summer Sweater
&Daughter
An evening walk, or cocktail alfresco, is a tricky proposition in June. A summer sweater is in order, but before you go about re-purposing that stretched-out woolen thing you’ve been wearing since November, behold this beauty from &Daughter. This sustainably minded brand was founded by former fashion publicist Buffy Reid and her father, Columba. The sweaters are produced in small batches at family-run firms in the U.K. and Scotland, and while we hate to choose favorites, the Stevie style is the clear winner. Made of open-stitch cotton and linen, the neutral shade and just-slouchy-enough silhouette ensure that it can be tossed over swimsuits and cocktail dresses with equal aplomb. ($380, net-a-porter.com)
The Swimsuit
LemLem
Finding a one-piece bathing suit that doesn’t resemble something our mother may have ordered from Lands’ End in 1993 is a tall order. Enter LemLem, and this halter-neck beauty made of stretch Jacquard. A swimwear-designer friend swears that the leg holes are the most important aspects of a bathing suit’s fit and, well, these are as flattering as possible. Same goes for the V-cut neckline, which is low enough to be interesting but not excessively revealing. Best of all is the winning pattern, which is made using Ethiopian handweaving techniques. Prepare to be the best-dressed person on the beach. ($250, net-a-porter.com)
