The Topper

Woolrich

When a friend called from rural Connecticut to ask for coat recommendations, we found ourselves scrolling through many options from Woolrich. We went deep into the brand’s history and discovered that it was co-founded in the 1800s by an Englishman named John Rich, the son of a wool weaver who immigrated to Pennsylvania and began outfitting the local outdoorsmen. The wool-flannel check used in this shawl-collar coat dates back to 1850, and the fabric was named “buffalo” as an homage to Rich’s herd. Not only is it just the thing for our friend in New England, but it’s also equally well suited to layered-up urbanites. ($484, farfetch.com)

The Earrings

Lisa Eisner

Adding some fine jewelry to one’s collection—or giving it to a loved one—is an excellent start to celebrating 2020’s end. Air Mail editor at large Lisa Eisner has been maximizing her time in lockdown by dreaming up a new group of pieces that incorporate her go-to gemstones (quartz, citrine, turquoise) in extraterrestrial-inspired designs. We’re partial to these Amethyst Asteroid earrings, set in bronze and arranged in a chandelier style. But if you find yourself drawn to the black jade scarab cuff or the lapis moth bracelet, by all means. ($9,375; modaoperandi.com)

The Shoes

Issimo and Ferragamo’s Creations

Back in 2006, Salvatore Ferragamo mined its archives to develop its Creations collection, which comprises reworked versions of popular styles from the brand’s history. Now, Marie-Louise Scio has curated a selection of shoes of historical significance for Issimo, her e-commerce project that celebrates Italian style and design. Each pair is numbered and reproduced in limited editions, using the original patterns and materials. Take the Merletto ankle boot, which was designed in 1948. It’s handcrafted—made of leather cut into Tavarnelle lacework, which originated outside of Florence—and looks just as current today as it did in the 1950s, when it was a regular presence in magazines all over the world. The Skirt

Cos

Unlike summer skirts, which are worn so easily, winter styles tend to feel high-maintenance, especially during these highly interior times. No longer, thanks to this comfortable, elegant A-line skirt from Cos. Made of a warm, wool-cotton blend, it still manages to drape beautifully, thanks to the wrap-style front. The on-season color—toffee? caramel?—pairs beautifully with neutrals of all persuasions, whether that means a navy turtleneck and double-breasted blazer or even one of those cashmere tees we can’t seem to stop wearing.
