Don McCullin: 90

Don McCullin, Self-portrait in Crowthers Reclamation Yard, Isleworth, 1963.

Feb 14 – Apr 12, 2026

Sir Don McCullin CBE was born in London in 1935. During the Blitz, when he was five, he was taken to Somerset. But war never really left him. A 18, McCullin was called to the National Service and served as a photographer’s assistant. After his service ended, he became an overseas correspondent for the Sunday Times Magazine, covering the Vietnam War, the African AIDS epidemic, and conflicts in Northern Ireland. “Sometimes it felt like I was carrying pieces of human flesh back home with me,” McCullin said, “not negatives.” For his seven-decade career, McCullin became the first photojournalist to add a CBE to his litany of other awards. In honor of his 90th birthday, Hauser & Wirth has curated a retrospective of McCullin’s photographs that includes his only self-portrait, on display in the U.K. for the very first time. —Maggie Turner
