A History of Paper

“Wonderfully tender, never sentimental,” the Musical Theatre Review said of A History of Paper, which won a Fringe First when it premiered in Edinburgh, in 2024. The Scottish musical opens with an angry note about noise shoved through a letterbox, then follows the man and woman on each side of it, charting the relationship that follows entirely through the paper they leave behind. From receipts and napkins to plane tickets and birthday cards, the play explores how small discarded fragments add up to a shared life. Along the way it makes a case for analog in an increasingly digital world. This new staging stars Shirley Henderson and Alan Cumming, Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s new artistic director, in their first production together in four decades. —Clara Scholl
