Daniel Buren: Illuminare Lo Spazio

July 9 – Nov 1, 2020
Via San Tomaso, 53, 24121 Bergamo BG

“My painting, at the limit, can only signify itself,” the conceptual artist Daniel Buren has said of his site-specific installations. “It is. So much so, and so well, that anyone can make it and claim it.” Buren first developed the concept of a “degree zero of painting” in the early 1960s, when he began working with simple stripes—a pattern that seemingly “anyone can make.” He uses stripes to change—and dynamically charge—perspectives of space and architecture. In this installation, graphic fabrics illuminate the palazzo’s Sala delle Capriate’s ancient frescos and curvatures, casting one of the city’s most important historical venues in a fascinating new light. —E.C.
