George Hoyningen-Huene was born into the Russian aristocracy in 1900, but the Russian Revolution forced his family to flee and they ended up in Europe. The young man was a master of reinvention, with many tricks up his sleeve. In Paris, he began working for French Vogue, painting backdrops for shoots and sketching. When they handed him a camera, he took pictures. By 1925, he was the magazine’s chief of photography. Hoyningen-Huene documented beauty for the rest of his life—design, fashion, artists, architecture, and stars ranging from Coco Chanel to Charlie Chaplin. This exhibition presents over 100 of his photographs—classically inclined and deeply influential. —Elena Clavarino
