In the 1980s, the civil engineer and entrepreneur Renato de Albuquerque bought an estate in Sintra, Portugal, a quaint town near Lisbon; it included some of the earliest Portuguese commissions featuring European figures. Around the same time, he started a collection of porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Renato’s daughter, the stylish former gallery director Mariana Teixera de Carvalho—who was married to U2 bass guitarist Adam Clayton—has now converted the startling quinta into an arts destination, dedicated to ceramics. “Ceramics have everything to do with community,” she told the Financial Times. “They are produced for the most convivial moments in life, for shared moments. This house has given us so much joy. Now we can share it with others.” —Elena Clavarino
