Paris’s Centre Pompidou closed last year for renovations but its collection is active and on the move, with stops in Metz and Brussels before it lands at Shanghai’s West Bund Museum. The traveling exhibition is focused on landscape, a genre that has taken a markedly different path in Western art than in China. Before Impressionism, European vistas were often little more than supporting scenery for portraits or grand narratives. In this show, works from 1905 to the present show how artists flipped the script, turning the backdrop into the main attraction. —Elena Clavarino
