In 1983, the photographer Bruce Bernard captured the artist Lucian Freud posed on his side on a wooden box, striking his version of one of Henry Moore’s reclining figures. Although Moore and Freud moved for some time in the same artistic circles, Bernard’s photo is the only concrete link between them. It is with this image that the first exhibition to present their work side by side begins. Both artists drew upon family as a recurring theme. Moore often focused on relationships and groups, best seen in his maquettes of the Madonna and Child and his wartime shelter drawings, which captured families in hiding during the London Blitz. Freud was inspired by his children, lovers, and friends, and his portraits of them were intimate and emotionally resonant. At Hastings Contemporary, 20 works—Moore’s abstractions and Freud’s raw realism—engage in a sustained conversation. —Maggie Turner
