Alice Neel (1900–1984) spent decades painting the people no one else was painting. Working-class residents of Spanish Harlem. Immigrants. Activists. The anonymous figures of everyday urban life. Her portraits were unflinching, often deliberately unfinished and raw, as though she had caught her subjects before they had time to compose themselves. Recognition came late: she was nearly 80 before the art world caught up. The Serralves Museum is now presenting a major survey of her work in the Álvaro Siza wing. —Elena Clavarino
