The Iranian-born, U.S.-based artist Shirin Neshat rose to prominence with work—black-and-white photographs complicated by layers of calligraphy—that addressed the ideological struggle between feminism and Iran’s religious values. Later, her vision turned Westward. “We are seeing a reshuffling of the cards of power and its players,” Neshat says, “With the rise of white supremacy and the present threat against immigrants, I now turn my lens towards my host country, America.” This exhibition spans 30 years of her career. How far have women come since then? Two-hundred photographs and 10 video installations offer a slice of the story. —Elena Clavarino
