Francesco Clemente lives in New York, but he grew up in the sprawling city of Naples, where Vesuvius looms large. In 1970, Clemente began making ink drawings and whimsical collages inspired by his childhood dreams. Three years later, he moved to India and began poring over Hindu spiritual texts. He collaborated with local craftsmen on dreamlike frescoes, rich with symbolism, and painted ethereal human figures in an earthen palette accented with brushstrokes of brazen pink. “I believe there is such a thing as an imagination shared by the different contemplative traditions,” he has said. “My goal is to collect images and references from these traditions and connect them with emotions from the present day and common experiences.” This exhibition—Clemente’s largest solo show in his native Italy—sees the artist presenting six canvas tents, intricately painted, alongside wall paintings and other wonders from the clouds. —Elena Clavarino
