Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Le Jeu de cartes (The Card Game), 1937.

Until Sept 12
Dorsoduro, 701-704, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (1908–1992) discovered art early. Born and raised in Lisbon, the daughter of a diplomat, she was exposed to culture from a young age. By the time she was 11, she had encountered the sharp canvases and whimsical costumes of the Italian Futurists at the Ballets Russes. Vieira da Silva enrolled at the Academia de Belas-Artes in Lisbon, studying under Emilia dos Santos Braga, and later continued her training in Paris with Fernand Léger. There, in the City of Light, she became part of the Art Informel movement, a European form of Abstract Expressionism. Her style blends elements of Futurism, Cubism, and Constructivism on large, luminous canvases, where jagged shapes interrupt and reconfigure the picture plane. This exhibition brings together 70 works by Vieira da Silva, on loan from museums around the world. —Elena Clavarino
