Everyone knows something about Picasso. He was Spanish—born in Málaga in 1881. He had a Blue Period and a Rose Period. He developed Cubism. He painted Guernica. He loved women, he used women, he sometimes married them. Picasso first traveled to Paris in 1900. He settled there in 1904, and from the 1940s until his death, in 1973, he lived in the South of France. And yet, Picasso’s status in France was that of the eternal foreigner: he was snubbed by the French and watched by the authorities. Why? This show in Rome answers the question. —Elena Clavarino
