Towards Zero

Anjelica Huston as Lady Tressilian in Towards Zero.

The author of 66 detective novels, Agatha Christie invites her readers to navigate twists and intricacies, and to finger—if they can—the guilty. Towards Zero (1944) unfolds on the West coast of England during the summer of 1936, when the celebrity couple Nevile and Audrey Strange return to Gull’s Point, the seaside home of Nevile’s elderly widowed aunt, Lady Tressilian. But there’s a complication. The childhood sweethearts have gotten a divorce and Nevile brings along his new wife too—Kay. Other family and friends make up a cast of enigmatic, bitter, curious, and deceitful characters. Moreover, a failed suicide attempt and a wrongful accusation of theft hint at a larger, more menacing scheme. The BBC’s new adaptation stars Anjelica Huston as Lady Tressilian, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Nevile, Ella Lily Hyland as Audrey, and Matthew Rhys as the investigator. —Jeanne Malle
