Fall River, Massachusetts, is known for many things, but most famously, or infamously, it’s the setting of a double murder that gave rise to a skipping-rope rhyme. On August 4, 1892, the wealthy businessman Andrew Borden, along with his second wife, Abby, were killed with an ax in their Fall River home. Also home at the time was Borden’s 32-year-old daughter from his first marriage, Lizzie. In a highly-publicized trial, Lizzie was acquitted of their murders, leaving the mystery unsolved—at least in a legal sense. A new season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Netflix show Monsters revisits the sensational trial.
