Early in her career, the tennis star Maria Sharapova was nicknamed “Ice Queen,” due to an aloof demeanor cold enough to freeze a room. That left her “respected more than loved,” according to Kevin Mitchell, The Guardian‘sformer tennis correspondent. After her retirement, in 2020, which left her a five-time major champion, Olympic medalist, and career Grand Slam winner, Sharapova realized that many other high-achieving women were perceived the same way. If you were singularly focused on achieving excellence, you were instead seen as callous and empty. Sharapova sets out to subvert this narrative and to celebrate female ambition. Her new weekly podcast places her in conversation with women who unapologetically embrace their accomplishments—actress Zoe Saldaña, for example, and Los Angeles Lakers C.E.O. Jeanie Buss. —Maggie Turner
