That Was Then

Natural skin care has been around since the cavewoman, but it gained popularity as an alternative to synthetic commercial products in the 60s and 70s, when women were placing cucumbers on their eyes, mixing oatmeal in their face masks, cracking eggs on their hair, and rinsing it all out with beer, apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice. Sunkist decided to get in on the action with a recipe for a lemon facial that promised to leave skin “feeling tingly clean, and your pores tightened.” They were right about a few things: Citric acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, meaning it speeds cell turnover and removes surface oil. But it also compromises the skin barrier, leading to irritation, redness, dryness, and terrible, skin-destroying sunburns. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade—and leave skincare to the pros. —Linda Wells
