Stop Painting

May 22 – Nov 21, 2021
Calle de Ca’ Corner, 30135 Santa Croce, Venezia VE

“Painting is dead!” Over the last 150 years, due to cultural shifts and profound advances in technology, the practice of painting has experienced a number of ruptures that threatened its relevance. This exhibition, curated by the Swiss artist Peter Fischli, explores five such crises and the reinvention they inspired. Fischli begins in the 1800s, when the new discipline of photography undermined the concept of originality. He then examines the readymade and collage, the question of authorship, painting as a commodity, and the death of criticism. Fischli narrates in the first person, and the 110 works on view illustrate a story of calamity and rebirth. —E.C.
