Vija Celmins

Vija Celmins, Untitled (Big Sea #2), 1969.

Until Sept 21
Baselstrasse 101, 4125 Basel, Switzerland

Vija Celmins was born in 1938 in Riga, Latvia. In 1944, when Soviet forces reoccupied the country, her family fled first to Germany and then to the United States, settling in Indianapolis under the sponsorship of a local Lutheran church. There, Celmins began her meticulous studies of the natural world, subjects that have included spiderwebs, starry skies, rocks, oceanic waves. She draws, paints, and sculpts. Of her magical mixed-media renderings, Celmins, now 87, says, “They’re like translations, and then part of it is fiction, which is invention.” This exhibition brings together works from the 1960s to today. —Elena Clavarino
