When Jenny Saville was growing up in England, she found her eyes wandering to fleshy forms—Titian’s women, her teacher’s breasts, the folds of her own skin. “I just automatically pull out forms,” she has said. “It’s an instinct I’ve got as part of my nature.” Saville’s painted explorations capture the weight, tension, and physicality of the body with thick, gestural brushstrokes. At the National Portrait Gallery, the most comprehensive exhibition of her work ever held in her home country features 45 pieces that span the length of her career. —Elena Clavarino
