A death brings Des (Heather Agyepong) and Dre (Tosin Cole) together for the first time in eight years. They were a couple in high school, having met on the debate team, and their connection is just as strong now. Des knows she has to leave again soon. But is fate suggesting that she shouldn’t? Written by the Congolese-British playwright Benedict Lombe, Shifters jumps between time and place, yet we are never lost. Des and Dre “embody two unpretentiously articulate, passionate, complicated and vulnerable people ineluctably drawn towards each other,” Donald Hutera wrote in The Times, “even when they appear to be most in opposition.” —Jeanne Malle
