Evita

Rachel Zegler and the cast of Evita.

8 Argyll St, London W1F 7TF, United Kingdom

Evita premiered in the West End in 1978, the story of a woman who climbs out of the slums to become the wife of Argentina’s future president Juan Perón. A rock opera from composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice—the team who gave us Jesus Christ Superstar in 1971——Evita was an instant classic buoyed by the soaring hit song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” In this new adaptation, the director Jamie Lloyd has added his personal touch to the proceedings, which includes a controversial decision to have Evita sing her Act Two anthem on a balcony outside the theater, facing the street—the audience inside the theater watches on a video monitor. Stepping into the title role is Rachel Zegler, the petite brunette best known for playing Maria in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film adaptation of West Side Story. —Jeanne Malle
