“Marley was dead …” So begins the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, his haunted night and its immortal message. Jack Thorne’s stage adaptation of the Dickens classic, which premiered to raves at the Old Vic in 2017, is A Christmas Carol with a communal embrace. Think handbells, clog dancing, and carols. Psychologically audacious, the production is immersive and inclusive. This year, the Broadway powerhouse Andy Karl stars as Scrooge. In 2019, a limited Broadway run of this production, starring Campbell Scott, won five Tony Awards. —Laura Jacobs
