The British series Peaky Blinders ended four years ago. Now it returns, with creator Steven Knight bringing the gangster Thomas Shelby out of retirement—and onto the big screen. The show started as a cult favorite on the BBC, but an acquisition by Netflix in 2014 brought it to a global audience, where it became a cultural phenomenon. “Playing Tommy Shelby is like putting on an old pair of shoes,” the Irish actor Cillian Murphy told The Guardian. “It’s more than just putting on the cap. I have to always spend a few months getting into that mindset.” The film picks up during W.W. II, when an aging Shelby is tasked with dismantling a Nazi plot to crash the British economy. New cast additions include Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, and Barry Keoghan as Shelby’s illegitimate son. The outlandish violence and thick Birmingham accents remain. —Maggie Turner
