John Akomfrah: The Unintended Beauty of Disaster

Apr 13 – June 5, 2021
67 Lisson St, London, NW1 5DA, United Kingdom

The artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah is known for his investigations into postcolonialism, memory, temporality, and aesthetics. In 1982, with David Lawson and Lina Gopaul, he cofounded the Black Audio Film Collective. The collective made acclaimed films, in which it investigated the nuances behind real and imagined past events. In this exhibition, Akomfrah unveils a series of new and recent works, including photo-text pieces and a three-screen video installation. His focus is the Black Lives Matter demonstrations that have rocked the world over this last year. —E.C.
