The London-based painter Alvaro Barrington was raised between New York and Grenada, but Caribbean nature and culture has had the greater impact on his art. Barrington’s newest body of work, presented in two chapters at Sadie Coles HQ, is rooted in the Grenadian lands and seas. The first chapter, “Back Home,” is a series of paintings and works on paper in which sunsets over the Caribbean Sea contain allusions to previous artists—from the 19th-century Romantic J. M. W. Turner to Claude Monet and Mark Rothko. The second chapter, “I Am … I Said,” is a series of panels made of burlap, a reference to the agricultural trade industry of Grenada. The two chapters are a poetic commentary on the culture and economy of the region. —Lucy Horowitz
