Charles March has been fascinated with photography since he was 12, the year his five-decade career began. At 16, he left Eton College to apprentice with Stanley Kubrick on the set of Barry Lyndon. He then took his camera to East Africa, where his documentary work established him as one of Britain’s most prolific photographers. “I want my pictures to create an impression, a feeling,” March has said, “by holding onto a moment in nature that would otherwise be lost as soon as it appears.” A new exhibition at Hamiltons Gallery focuses on March’s foray into abstraction, images in which line and shadow reflect his observations of shorelines. These delicate photographs are akin to sketches and Chinese calligraphy. —Maggie Turner
