The Butch Gardens School of Art sounds like a prestigious art program. Yet while it did produce many artworks, it was a faux school with only one student: Teddy Sandoval. He founded the fictional entity and used the school name to generate buzz around his pieces, which included ceramics, prints, drawings, paintings, and more. Sandoval was part of a circle that included the artists Joey Terill and Edmundo Meza, and though their work has been featured in many galleries, Sandoval, who died in 1995, at 49, was often overlooked. This touring show hopes to change that. Sandoval’s playful, sometimes subversive art focuses on masculinity, and his favorite motif is a faceless man with a Chevron mustache. —Hannah Gross
