Speculative fiction—an uncanny valley of the present or future—is all the rage in publishing, but the genre hasn’t much touched the stage. The polymath creators Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born are out to change that. With their ongoing adaku trilogy, they are inventing a new form. On paper, adaku, part two: she shivers with it sounds straightforward enough: “Set in a near-future United States, a young woman taught that she has no history worth remembering receives sudden transmissions” from the past. But Okpokwasili wasn’t anointed a MacArthur genius for nothing. With Born directing and designing the production, the Igbo-American uses her considerable powers of choreography as well as song- and play-writing to unsettle our expectations of any one of these disciplines. In she shivers with it, five women (including the mesmerizing Okpokwasili) sing and trudge. They argue and dance. They shimmer with light. —Apollinaire Scherr
