The Ancient Greek word aletheia, which means “disclosure,” is the title of Berlinde De Bruyckere’s new exhibition in Turin. Having recently visited a skin trader workshop in Anderlecht, Belgium, De Bruyckere here works with animal hides, freshly flayed. They are piled high on palettes, like dusty strata or horrible millefeuille. They are also draped, shaped, waxed. Victims and perpetrators. Death and dissolution. “At this moment in time,” the artist says, “where we see so many resemblances to the restlessness of the late 30’s that preceded the unspeakable monstrosities of the Holocaust … I feel the need to bring bold, strong images.” —L.J.
