Over the last year, a relentless campaign of bombings and mortar fire has reduced much of Gaza to rubble, including 69 cultural sites that include museums, places of worship, and archaeological sites. The Strip has been home to great civilizations since the Bronze and Ottoman eras—a Cockaigne of caravan traders and merchants, seated at that comfortable intersection between Arabia, Africa, and the Mediterranean. To protect that heritage, Geneva’s Museum of Art and History has been harboring 529 objects for the Palestinian National Authority since 2007. Among the splendors are amphorae, mosaics, figurines, funerary stelae, and statuettes from ancient civilizations. This exhibition presents objects that span 5,000 years of history, reflecting on both then and now. —Elena Clavarino
