Salvo—Salvatore Mangione—was born in Sicily in 1947, amid postwar destruction in the South. In the 1970s, he made his way north to Turin. The Arte Povera movement was in full swing but no matter, Salvo wanted to paint. He would drift in and out of the art scene until his death, in 2015, painting his vibrant, often cartoon-like landscapes. Last year, one of his canvases sold for $1 million at Christie’s. One of the biggest-ever Salvo exhibitions now comes to his hometown. —Elena Clavarino
