In 2023, Australia held a constitutional referendum. Voters were asked whether or not the Australian Constitution should be altered to create an Indigenous advisory body in the government, which would be called the “Indigenous Voice to Parliament.” In a stunning turn of events, all six states voted “no” to the proposal—a crushing defeat that divided the nation. In response, the director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Tony Ellwood, pressed ahead with plans for the largest-ever international touring exhibition of Indigenous Australian art. Over 200 works by 130 artists are coming together in Washington, D.C. Stars such as Emily Kam Kngwarray and Gulumbu Yunupiŋu are present in the lineup. —Elena Clavarino
