The Rainmaker

John Slattery as Leo F. Drummond in The Rainmaker.

In 1997, Francis Ford Coppola directed a film adaptation of John Grisham’s The Rainmaker. It starred Matt Damon as Rudy Baylor, an inexperienced recent graduate of Memphis State University Law School who takes on the case of a lifetime when he represents Dot and Buddy Black. Their son Donny Ray is terminally ill with leukemia. He could have been saved, however, if the Black’s insurance company, Great Benefit, hadn’t denied coverage of a bone marrow transplant. A long-anticipated remake of the film now comes to television as a series. This time, Baylor is played by the British actor Milo Callaghan, and John Slattery steps into the role of his powerful adversary Leo Drummond. The project was developed by Michael Seitzman, and John Grisham and Jason Blum are executive producers. —Elena Clavarino
