The state fair is a time-honored tradition in America. Dairy barns are draped with bunting. Competitions judge livestock, agriculture, and baked goods. Carnival rides and rodeos offer thrills. But who are the artisans behind the hats and banners, traditional clothing and local leather- and wood-working. Exploring the craftsmanship that goes hand in hand with a celebrated U.S. tradition, this exhibition presents 240 objects and oddities from the mid-19th century to today—contributions from 43 states and tribal nations. —Elena Clavarino
