Beatrice's Puppet Show, works by Andie Dinkin

Andie Dinkin, Heat (An Ode to Florine Stettheimer), 2023.

On first blush, the overlaps between the Carlyle on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Gigi’s in Hollywood, and Evalina in Fort Greene are not obvious. There is no particular “pipeline,” as the kids say, linking these establishments in clientele or cuisine. However, a discerning diner may notice the hand of the painter and erstwhile muralist Andie Dinkin gracing the walls of each. Her distinctive whimsy rendered in rich gouache feels unmistakable and somehow hard to place. A little bit of Bemelmans in Brooklyn, a little bit of Old Hollywood on 76th Street. This month, Dinkins debuts a new, if limited, series in a show at Half Gallery’s annex in the East Village, titled, somehow appropriately, “Beatrice’s Puppet Show.” It’s a jewel-box show in many senses—the space is tiny and the works are gems. —Harrison Vail
