The beloved Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir was many things—a master of dappled light, an admirer of tender femininity, a chronicler of café society. “Renoir is the final representative of a tradition that runs directly from Rubens to Watteau,” said the art critic and historian Germain Bazin. Less known, yet central to Renoir’s practice, are his drawings, watercolors, and pastels—from the academic studies he made while training under Charles Gleyre, in Paris in the 1860s, to the portraits of his later years. This exhibition explores these works, taking a large-scale preparatory sketch for The Great Bathers as its point of departure. —Elena Clavarino
